Spring school holidays are here, the weather’s warming up and we’re calling it – it’s time to get the van out and head our way.  If your idea of a good school holiday involves fewer screens, more fresh air, somewhere to throw in a line and plenty of room for the kids to roam, we’ve got it all.  

Across the Goondiwindi Region you’ll find everything from caravan parks with pools and plenty to keep the kids busy, to low-cost RV friendly camps in our country towns and beautiful bush camping beside the river.  

The choice is yours!  You can pick one and stay for a few days or you can hook the van on and make a road trip of it.  

Here are a few of our favourite places to pull up.  

LAKE COOLMUNDA CARAVAN PARK  

This place is made for school holidays.  If there’s one place where the kids are unlikely to ask, ‘what are we doing now?’, Lake Coolmunda Caravan Park is a pretty good bet.  

Around 75 minutes from Goondiwindi, Lake Coolmunda is all about getting outside – fishing, boating, kayaking, birdwatching, riding bikes and all with plenty of space to explore.   

At Lake Coolmunda Caravan Park, you can choose from powered and unpowered camping and caravan sites or leave the van at home and grab a cabin instead.  There is a swimming pool, BBQ facilities and easy access to the boat ramp – and then there’s all the little things that make a country camping holiday go from good to unforgettable.  

Find the sunset swing, see what’s happening at the ‘Mother Cluckin’ Hen House’, throw a line in from your camping chair and watch the sun go down over the lake.  Families love visiting this place and we don’t blame them!

GREENUP MEETING PLACE

On the other side of Lake Coolmunda, you’ll find somewhere completely different with Greenup Meeting Place tucked up at Bracker Creek on the site of the former Greenup School – and it’s one of those places where you can properly settle in.   

Camp by the creek, get the kayak out, go fishing, explore the property or just let the kids be kids while you sit back and enjoy the serenity.  There’s history here, plenty of character and the CC café (pictured below) is onsite when you feel like a caffeine hit.   

If your school holidays plans involve a campfire, a creek and slowing things right down, put this one on the list.  

BUSHLAND HIDEAWAY ON THE RIVER  

The name gives you a pretty good clue to how magical this place is but imagine grassy private river frontage, campfires, fishing and swimming after being welcomed by your lovely hosts Phil and Anne.  

Bushland Hideaway on the River sits on the banks of the Dumaresq River, around 23km from Yelarbon and 40km from Texas.  Pull the van up beside the river then spend your days fishing, swimming, kayaking or riding the tracks around the property.  Each campsite has a designated campfire area, basic toilet facilities and plenty of room to switch off for a few days.  

This is country camping at it’s best and a true slice of paradise.

TEXAS DUMARESQ RIVER REST AREA  

If you’re new to free camping or just know a good spot when you see one, put Texas Dumaresq River Rest Area on your list!  This spot was named ‘Best Grey Nomad Freedom Stay in 2022’ so we’re not the only ones who reckon it’s pretty good.   

Just outside the township of Texas, this much-loved free camp sits beside the Dumaresq River beneath the gums.  The kids can fish, swim, kayak and explore – or you can also head into Texas for a wander, visit the Texas Rabbit Works and grab a country pub lunch.

FREE CAMPING ALONG THE MACINTYRE RIVER  

If you love to go completely off grid, find yourself a spot along the Macintyre River.  Some of our best free camping spots are tucked along the river where you can pull up for a few days and let Mother Nature be the entertainment officer for the kids!  

Think fishing, kayaking, kids exploring and plenty of birdlife and wildlife for company.   

Bengalla, Lees, Rainbow, Yellowbank and Keetah Reserves are among the spots worth knowing about, with conditions and facilities varying between location. You can read more about each here or check out our dedicated caravan & camping brochure here.

MAKE GUNDY YOUR BASE  

Pull into Goondiwindi and use us as your base for a few days instead. We’ve got a few different options depending on how you like to travel – from spacious sites at the Showgrounds to a full holiday park with pools, playgrounds and cabins.  

Goondiwindi Holiday Park  

Travelling with kids?  Goondiwindi Holiday Park is an easy place to settle in.   

There are spacious, shady powered and unpowered sites, ensuite sites and self-contained cabins if you’ve decided you’d rather leave the van at home.   

But during the school holidays, the large, heated pool and spa might be the real winner!  There’s also a camp kitchen, BBQs and plenty of room to settle in for a few days while you explore our region.

Goondiwindi Tourist Park  

Over at Goondiwindi Tourist Park, you’ve got ten acres to spread out across, with caravan and tent sites plus cabins available.  Some of the unpowered sites sit right beside the billabong, while the kids have a swimming pool and shaded playground to keep them occupied.   

There’s a camp kitchen, BBQ areas and plenty of space!  

Rivergums Caravan Park  

Prefer to be right in town?  

Rivergums Caravan Park is tucked away in a quiet spot less than 50 metres away from the Macintyre River and within easy walking distance to the Goondiwindi CBD.   

There are powered and unpowered sites, cabins and on-site accommodation – and it’s also pet friendly!  Best of all, the River Walk is basically on your doorstep.  Follow it into town and you’re only a short wander from shops, cafes, pubs and a mecca of shopping!     

Goondiwindi Showgrounds  

If you’re looking for somewhere simple with plenty of room to pull up, the Goondiwindi Showgrounds is another option right here in Goondiwindi.  Set the van up, put your feet down and use Gundy as a home base while you explore.   

Book a seat on the Goondiwindi Cotton Town & Farm Tour, visit Customs House Museum, meet ‘Gunsynd’ our most famous local, walk or ride along the Macintyre River, hunt down the Art Trail, do a little shopping, find somewhere good for lunch (you’ll be spoilt for choice) and see Illuminate the Flow once the sun goes down.

You don’t need a complicated school holiday itinerary – sometimes all you need is a full tank of fuel, somewhere good to pull up and a few days with nowhere you need to be. So go on, hook the van on and we’ll see you out here!
