Bungunya

Translating to ‘dry camp’ in the local Indigenous language, Bungunya lives up to its reputation as a safe living place.

You’ll find this tidy town immediately north of the Macintyre River, the watercourse which serves as the border between Queensland and New South Wales. The Weir River also flows from east to west through the northern part of the area.

HISTORY

Bungunya was established as a service centre and community hub for the surrounding agricultural properties. Bungunya Provisional School opened on a half-time basis in 1916, before becoming a full-time school in 1918 and a State School soon after.

Bungunya was put on the map with the extension of the railway, which was once used to transport wool from local stations.
