First stop – Texas Railway Museum. Here you’ll find traditional, restored trains and wagons, station platforms, railway sleepers and railway tracks.
All aboard for a self-drive tour of significant railway sites. Head along the Inglewood-Texas Rd towards Inglewood Railway Station. The Inglewood station building was built in 1911 – the main spaces comprised of offices, shelter shed, ladies’ room and toilets and is significant for its role in the development of Inglewood as a major township.
Texas – Inglewood 55 km / 40 mins
The Railway Bridge over Macintyre Brook at Inglewood is another piece of significant railway architecture. At 89 metres in length, it’s predominately made up of recycled pieces from other bridges – the main span was originally part of a bridge that spanned Countess Street in Brisbane, while eight fish belly plate girders were most likely part of the Breakfast Creek bridge that was replaced in 1902.
Head East toward Yelarbon. On your way, keep your eye out for the Whetstone Railway Bridge over the Macintyre Brook, which is also made of recycled parts.
Inglewood – Yelarbon 40 km / 30 mins
Lunch at the Oasis Hotel in Yelarbon is a must for any rail enthusiast. Grab your meal and sit in the beer garden and watch the trains (road and rail) go by.
No trip to Yelarbon is complete without a quick photo opportunity with the Yelarbon Silos, and a stop at the Yelarbon Recreation Grounds Railway Museum. Entry is free to the museum; however, a gold coin donation is appreciated.
Head west into Goondiwindi and book into your accommodation for the night – the Goondiwindi Motel is perfect for rail enthusiasts, located opposite the railway line and close to all the towns attractions.
Yelarbon – Goondiwindi 51 km / 40 mins
Wander down the road and share a meal and drink with the locals at the aptly named Railway Hotel.
After a hearty breakfast at one of Goondiwindi’s cafés, follow the rail west to your first station of the day, the Toobeah Railway Station. The original station was built in 1913, however the small timber building you can see today was relocated from Passmore near Stanthorpe in 1964 when the original burnt down.
Goondiwindi – Toobeah 47 km / 35 mins. Toobeah – Bungunya 23 km / 16 mins
Continue your journey westward, through the railway village of Bungunya. Bungunya was once a busy railway centre transporting thousands of bales of wool from local sheep stations. Like many other rural towns, the Bungunya railway station has closed due to improved transport services.
The last stop on our train journey is the Talwood Train Station – the original railway station building can be found at the Talwood Recreation Grounds. Before you continue along to the Balonne Region, call into the Talwood Pub for a scrumptious counter meal, or if caravanning/camping, set up camp at the Talwood Recreation Grounds for camping at the cost of a donation.
