Start your day right with a heart-starter coffee and breakfast from one of Goondiwindi’s many cafes and eateries.

 

 

Jump in the car and head west on the Barwon Highway. First stop is Callandoon Pioneer Cemetery, just 20 km from Goondiwindi. Callandoon these days is a working cotton farm, but during the 1840s to 1860s it was a well-established holding with a post office, police barracks and gaol.

Pop into the Toobeah Hotel Motel and pick up a takeaway morning tea, a popular one-stop shop.

Throw in a fishing line or do a spot of birdwatching as you pop down the picnic blanket for morning tea in the Bungunya Reserve on the banks of the magnificent Weir River.

Take a wander around the Talwood Recreation Grounds and soak in the country atmosphere. While you are here, check out the original Talwood Railway Station and lock up building. We recommend stopping at the Talwood Café or Pub for lunch before continuing your westbound journey.

Continue west and into the red dirt country of Weengallon. Keep an eye out for the Weengallon Aboriginal Rock Wells, which are a place of spiritual and cultural importance to the local Traditional Owners.

Take a short detour into yesteryear by popping into the small community of Daymar where you’ll find a perfect example of a quaint “bush church” at the Our Lady of the Lourdes Catholic Church. Also check out Daymar’s Timber Town Hall. Book ahead to be able to rest for the night at Lanarium Retreat, just outside of Daymar.

 

Weengallon – Daymar 30 km / 22 mins

Head on into Thallon for silo action at the famous Thallon GrainCorp Silos and to get up close to William the Wombat. Continue up the road to Nindigully Pub where you can treat yourself to a world-famous Road Train Burger, then camp along the banks of the Moonie River.

 

Daymar – Thallon 12 km / 9 mins. Thallon – Nindigully 33 km / 22 mins
