Texas Dumaresq River Rest Area
If you’re new to free camping and looking to dip your toe in, Texas Dumaresq River Rest Area is our top tip! This glorious spot, nestled just outside the township of Texas, was voted in 2022 as the ‘Best Grey Nomad Freedom Stay’ and we agree – it’s a complete winner!
This campsite is the perfect balance of free camping while also being within walking distance to the Texas Main Street with a connected pathway to the iconic Stockman Hotel and local attractions. Settle into grassy sites perfectly placed along the Dumaresq River before cooling off with a swim, wetting a line or putting the kayaks in for an idyllic paddle down the river. This free campsite comes equipped with amenities such as phone reception, tables and bins – making it a convenient spot for travellers of all ages to experience the very best of Goondiwindi Region.
Border River Drive Reserves
One of the greatest drives in our region is along the Kildonan Road that connects Goondiwindi to Yelarbon. Locals affectionately call it the “River Road” as it snakes its way around the river, lined by local farms, providing an idyllic tourist drive. This road is the gateway to six great fishing and camping reserves which provide the full free camping experience. The reserves are pet friendly so you can bring the whole family, however, please be aware there are no amenities, so you will need to come prepared with everything you need. It is important to check Goondiwindi Regional Council's website for closure updates after periods of heavy rainfall.
Rainbow Reserve is a short drive from Goondiwindi (approximately 17 kilometres) and is a great spot for fishing and swimming. With plenty of spaces to explore on foot and set up camp, this is a favourite. There is a dirt boat ramp that handles most tinnies.
Yellowbank Reserve is situated approximately 25 kilometres from Goondiwindi and is the perfect spot for those not wanting to be too isolated from town while experiencing the beauty of being disconnected. This reserve features a gorgeous canopy of trees, hidden tracks and plenty of room to explore.
Keetah Reserve is settled on the Dumaresq River approximately 55km from Goondiwindi. With the Keetah Bridge acting as your backdrop and the stoney riverbed underfoot, this great camping spot is perfect for the keen fisherman. It’s important to check river heights and rainfall in the region before setting up in this location, as river levels can rise rapidly.
Bengalla Reserve offers visitors a free camping ground on a large reserve with plenty of room that stretches along the Dumaresq River. This peaceful patch is ideal for fishing, swimming, or kicking back with a cold one and watching nothing but nature.
Lees Reserve ("rapids" pictured above) is an ideal location to visit when permitted by dry weather. On a perfect day, this reserve, 33km from Goondiwindi, offers visitors a rock bar to sit, swim and cool off. Lees Reserve is a favourite with locals on a hot day as the rapids provide great entertainment to cool down. Please note that caution should be taken with water levels as the river is prone to rapids.
Cunningham Weir is located on the Dumaresq River about 30km east of Yelarbon. The weir is suitable for small vessels and paddle crafts to fully immerse yourself into riverside living for a few days! There is a free camp on the New South Wales side of the river off the Cunningham Weir Road.
Whetstone Rest Area
Around Inglewood, Whetstone Rest Area provides waterfront campsites, bitumen bases and shady surroundings. This great location is situated 26km northeast of Yelarbon on the Cunningham Highway and allows RV operators and campers to park up for a maximum of 14 days on the banks of the Macintyre Brook Grove. Soak up the serenity and enjoy everything our gorgeous region has to offer. This site features minimal amenities so it’s recommended that you come prepared.
