Get hitched: How to caravan the Goondiwindi Region
Published on 28 October 2024
Calling all caravanners to the Goondiwindi Region.
With wide open roads, plenty of free and paid caravan sites, and five highways intersecting in town, it’s safe to say, we’ve got a camp site reserved for you.
From expansive country views on our sealed roads to award-winning free camps, tiny towns to stock up your stores to a calendar of events to help you plan your stay – we’ve complied everything you need to know to help you caravan the Goondiwindi Region, so the only hitch is the one you instigated yourself.
Where to restock your onboard amenities
Need to refill your water? You’ll find several refill points across our region including a paid water refill point in Goondiwindi at the Council Depot on West Street.
In Texas, paid drinking water for a minimum $5 card charge is offered at the free public dump point at 67 Flemming Street.
In Inglewood, head to the Apex Lions Park at 12 Albert Street for the paid water refill station found with the dump point, opposite the toilet block.
Talwood offers drinking water and a free public dump point at 29 Recreation Street.
Be aware our townships of Toobeah and Yelarbon don’t have water refill points, so plan ahead.
Where to find dump points across the region
For your convenience, we have several dump points in Goondiwindi including one at Redmond Park, 1 Andersen Street – look out for the ‘Big Cod’ - the Goondiwindi Showgrounds at 323 Boundary Road is available for campers staying there, and at the Ampol Service Station, 227 Boundary Road.
In Texas, visit the dump point at the Council Depot, Lot 67 Flemming Street.
In Inglewood there is a free dump point found opposite the toilet block, at the Inglewood Apex Lions Park.
Yelarbon has a dump point at the Yelarbon Recreation Grounds on Wyemo Street – a gold coin donation is always appreciated by the volunteers.
Heading west, Talwood has a free public dump point at 29 Recreation Street.
Just a heads up - there is no dump point in the township of Toobeah.
Where to stay for free
If it’s free or low-cost camping you’re looking for, we recommend you stay awhile at the popular Dumaresq River Free Camp, only 1 km from the township of Texas, right on the border. Pet and Big Rig-friendly, this site has level grassy areas, spots to fish and swim, BBQs and rubbish bins.
Heading west, Yelarbon offers low-cost camping at the Recreation Grounds with amenities housed in the restored Railway Station. It’s only a short walk to the Yelarbon Lagoon, silo art, general store and pub. You can check out our Caravan & Camping brochure for more options, too.
Must do attractions as you explore the Goondiwindi Region
Soaring 24 metres into the sky, the Yelarbon silo art is a view to behold. Park up the van in the viewing area and stretch your legs a while.
Onto Goondiwindi, we have natural wonders aplenty – stroll the mighty Macintyre River Walk, get historical at Customs House Museum and explore a working cotton farm in Goondiwindi Cotton’s Town & Farm Tour.
Fancy a hearty pub lunch? Every one of our towns is home to classic country pubs and the quality food and atmosphere they’re famous for.
Need a hand?
If you break down or need repairs there are plenty of local towing service operators, mechanical and tyre services ready to help and get you back on the road.
You’ll find our Visitor Information Centres in Goondiwindi, Inglewood and Texas located on the main streets. The Goondiwindi VIC is open six days where our volunteers are ready to help you. Parking is available off the main street and enter at the rear of the Civic Centre via 45 Bowen Street.
Remember when driving out here in the west, the wildlife can get a little ‘highway curious’ particularly around dawn and dusk – so take extra care for hopping kangaroos or pigs around these times, or better yet stick around town a little later to avoid these times on the road.
If the weather is making road conditions unclear, your best bet is to go online and check out QLD Traffic, NSW Live Traffic or Goondiwindi Regional Council’s local Disaster Dashboard for up-to-date information.
