9 things to do with the kids in Goondiwindi
Published on 28 October 2024
We all know what it’s like to keep kids entertained when you’re on the road. It’s like listening to “are we there yet?” … on repeat.
Fortunately, Goondiwindi (or Gundy as it’s known to locals) is a family-friendly town offering plenty to see and do – for both the young, and young at heart.
If you’re not sure how to keep the ankle-biters happy, we’ve got you covered with nine things to do with kids in Goondiwindi.
1. Meet a famous race horse
To plan your day, visit the Civic Centre on Marshall Street that houses the Visitor Information Centre, Library, Art Space, original Council Chambers and the Gunsynd Museum. It’s here the kids will be introduced to a famous local, the racehorse, Gunsynd - the ‘Goondiwindi Grey’ whose rags to riches story is one for the bed time books.
2. Wander art-lined walls
Wander down Bowen Lane, behind the Civic Centre, and discover part of our Art Trail with murals and installations by artists, local school students and community groups. Challenge the kids to spot all five cats hidden in the lane. All these incredible public artworks are thanks to our community group Lanescape, who commission and unveil public works annually.
3. Grab a milkshake
Grab a milkshake and a well-deserved coffee for you from OK Milkbar to energise yourselves for an activity-filled day. Check out the signpost on the corner of Marshall and McLean Streets to get your bearings – the kids will learn how far they are from major cities and other places.
4. Stretch your legs along the river walk
Take a stroll, or get the kids on their scooters, along the easy 3 km River Walk and immerse yourselves in the sights and sounds of the Macintyre, birdlife and ancient river gums. The kids will love spotting the sculptures and murals dotted along the shady pathway.
When you reach the boat ramp at the western end, check out the “Macintyre Cod Fossil” and Pelican sculptures by local artist, Angus Wilson, who also created the enormous paddock sculptures at ‘Nungwai’, his farm on the Cunningham Highway, east of town.
Don’t be surprised by the friendly “good mornings” and smiles from the locals as you explore.
5. Play in a park
If your kids need to burn off more energy, visit one of our many parks and playgrounds. It’s difficult to choose just one, but we do have options with enclosed play areas at the Town Park, a flying fox at Moffatt Street Park, skate park at Riddles Oval on Lagoon Street with BBQ facilities, and handy toilets at most parks. For those with tiny tots but big energy, Redmond Park is a shady haven with low-lying play equipment and even a giant cod to send photos of your trip to those back home.
6. Take a dip
Cool off at our recently refurbished public pool next to the Town Park. If you have littlies, the toddler pool is heated for their comfort. Don’t forget the sunscreen and make sure to check the opening hours.
7. Queue the next meal
We know kids are always hungry so enjoy local country hospitality offered at our cafés, pubs and restaurants, welcoming families with kids’ menus and play areas. The locally-owned Queensland Hotel has a garden area and the Victoria Hotel, aka The Vic, has a kids’ playroom.
Take your dining al fresco and take a picnic out to the Botanic Gardens or the Natural Heritage and Water Park. Both offer picnic tables, BBQ facilities, toilets and lots of open space for kids to run around and play. You can stock up on supplies at the local Goondiwindi Foodworks, Coles, Gibsons Butcher or The Larder Market.
8. Catch a movie
If you’re ready for some downtime or want to beat the heat, take a break and catch a movie at our Art Deco Cinema in the main street. Check session times online and head in for popcorn, ice-creams and a show.
9. Timing is everything
Time your trip to Gundy to coincide with one of the many family-friendly events we hold each year including the Goondiwindi Show in May that’s packed with rides and animal inspired attractions, Gourmet in Gundy in September for food and live music with plenty of open space for the kids to run and the Lanescape Twilight Festival in October – unveiling fun and unique art set against live music, good food and entertainment the kids will love!
