Day trips from Goondiwindi
Found a base to love in Goondiwindi but want to explore more of what our region has to offer? Read on for three day trippin’ itineraries – complete with hidden gems only a local would know!
Day 1: Gundy to Texas
Head out on Kildonan Road, the river road as it’s known to locals, for the scenic route to Texas. Keep your eyes out for winding creeks, emus and paddocks full of crops along the way. The drive is about an hour and twenty minutes / 114 km.
First stop is coffee of course! Grab a delicious brew and perhaps a sweet treat from Texas Bakery, Café & Groceries as you turn into Texas’ main street. Stretch the legs as you wander down High Street, stopping in for homemade treasures at Texas Cottage Industries or an interior delight at The Perfect Piece.
Your next stop is Texas Rabbit Works (the engine room pictured below), then head next door to the Texas Heritage & Tobacco Museum before a late lunch at the Stockman Hotel (a finalist in this years Queensland Hotel Associations Awards!).
Not ready to leave yet? Perhaps roll an afternoon bowl or take to the golf course before heading back to your home away from home in Gundy for the night.
Day 2: Gundy to Inglewood
Heading out on the Cunningham Highway, you’ll get a good 5 minutes into your trip before you need to stop – marvelling at the giant Nungwai sculptures (one of which is pictured below) and artworks on your right (opposite the airport – but you really can’t miss them). Local artist and grazier Angus Wilson has dedicated years of ‘tinkering’ to share these incredible works of art with visitors far and wide coming to view them and sneak a photo in too!
Nungwai aren’t the only big things out our way – as you drive through the tiny town of Yelarbon (about half an hour from Goondiwindi) you’ll notice the Graincorp Silo Art spanning eight silos, and at a whopping 96 meters long, it is one of the largest silo artworks in Australia.
Continue another 30 km’s, marking LevenK Farm on your map (or into your GPS!) to stop eleven km’s outside of Inglewood on your way. Ensuring to call ahead so your hosts Kelli and Matthew are ready to welcome you to our regions very own lavender and lucerne farm, complete with a gorgeous garden and ‘shed shop’ – filled with handmade and locally sourced giftware and treats.
Roll on into Inglewood and grab a takeaway coffee from On the Goat Espresso Bar (pictured below), tucked in the front of the Royal Inglewood Hotel before driving onto Coolmunda Olives (about a 10 minute / 15 km drive). Jump on their electric, 10-seater buggy to take a self-guided tour around the groves! Keep an eye out for the gorgeous view of Lake Coolmunda peeking through the olive trees and finish off with a tasting platter of their gorgeous produce.
Jump back in the car for a short, 20 minute / 28 km drive onto Greenup Meeting Place for a late lunch at the CC Café and a wander around this incredible hidden gem of a spot! There are multiple buildings, halls, artworks and even a shop filled with local artisan wares.
If you’ve got a little fuel left in the tank, exploring the Inglewood Heritage & Tobacco Museum on your way home is the perfect way to stretch the legs (slowly!) before heading back to Goondiwindi for the night. If you’re that way inclined, we highly recommend popping to the Wobbly Goat Bottlo on the main street on your way too, for a chat with the locals, a sneaky tipple to take home for the night, and if you’re lucky, a run in with a friendly ‘kid’ goat or two!!
Day 3: Gundy to Weengallon Rockwells & Talwood
Not all day trips need to be huge to be memorable – and this is one of them! We recommend grabbing a takeaway coffee in Goondiwindi for the drive as it’s a good hour / 90 km to Talwood – with plenty of crops and nature to see along the way. Press on past the tiny town of Talwood towards St George as you head to Ngaru-gi Gali (to drink); Weengallon Rock Wells.
This sacred site is a part of a trail of Rock Wells extending from southern to northern Queensland. The six wells are thought to be used when travelling between the Bunya Mountains and the Boobera Lagoon in Goondiwindi, or to places of spiritual importance. You can learn more and get a preview via this video made by Aussie Destinations Unknown.
Head back to Talwood and pull up at the Talwood pub for lunch – see how many quirky items you can find along the walls and above the bar; if the walls could talk, I am sure they would be laughing!!
Stretch the legs around the Talwood rec grounds after lunch before hopping back in the car and heading back to Goondiwindi; calling in at the Toobeah (pronounced “two-beer”) pub for a refreshing coldie and a yarn with the locals to break up the trip.
