The magic of country towns often lies in their lifestyle, and Goondiwindi Region is no exception. Come 12noon on a Saturday, many shops on the main street close their doors – and staff and the community are afforded the luxury of downtime to enjoy with family and friends. Bliss!

For those of us more accustomed to bustling city streets or coastal amenities, this is an unparalleled opportunity to relax, unwind and explore the great outdoors.

Not sure what to do? Read on as we show you how to make the most of this town-wide downtime.

Take the Goondiwindi Region Art Trail

Always open and not a winding queue or entry fee in sight – the Goondiwindi Art Trail is the perfect way to spend your Sunday. From larger-than-life sculptures to vibrant murals, all ages can stand in awe of what our region has to offer. Our highlights? The Yelarbon Graincorp Silos (one of the largest in the southern hemisphere), Angus Wilson’s Coat of Arms and a wander down Bowen Lane – see how many black cats you can find!

Go to market

The Town Park in Goondiwindi comes alive the last Sunday of the month with food stalls, coffee and local and handmade market stalls. You can’t leave without trying an ice-cream from the Dreamtime ice-cream truck. Mark your diary with our events calendar to find when the market is next being hosted.

Take a dive into one of our many waterways

Goondiwindi, Texas and Inglewood all offer fantastic swimming pool complexes. For those more adventurous, take a dive into the Macintyre or Dumaresq Rivers, Goondiwindi Botanical Gardens, Goondiwindi Heritage & Water Park or Coolmunda Dam. Goondiwindi might be inland, but it’s not short of water space with your choice of any one of our beautiful Reserves – Yellowbank, Rainbow, Bengella or Lees - which all promise plenty of space, sandy or rocky beaches, waterways and fresh air to get you into the country frame of mind.

Go fish

There’s a reason the Goondiwindi Region is regarded as one of the best freshwater fishing areas in Queensland – the region is positively brimming with Yellowbelly, Silver Perch and Murray Cod in its inland waterways. Before casting off, you’ll want to make note of fishing regulations regarding licencing, limits and seasons for both Queensland and New South Wales.

Garden days

The Goondiwindi Garden Club hosts monthly garden open days on a Sunday – open to all for a small fee. It offers a beautiful morning out to stroll through some of the region’s most beautiful gardens – and have morning tea while you’re at it! Drawing crowds of over 100, it’s one not to miss. Follow the Garden Club for dates.

Stretch your legs

The towns of Goondiwindi and Texas both have well-established walking and bike paths perfect for stretching those legs. Whether you are athletic or simply want to enjoy the fresh air and scenery, you can find a walking track on our town maps here.

Perfect pub grub

Our region is home to no less than nine hotels, each offering classic pub food to fuel your adventures. From the ice-cold drinks at the Railway Hotel or bao buns in the festoon lit beer garden of the Queensland Hotel, to the perfectly grilled steak with toppers at the Royal (all in Goondiwindi) – there’s plenty of options if you wanted to make your pub crawl progressive.

Pack a picnic

If you’re arriving in time to catch The Larder Market before 12noon on a Saturday, you can stock up on soft cheeses, artisan crackers, olives and their locally made, widely-renowned beetroot relish to fuel your Sunday picnic.

Foodworks in Goondiwindi & SPA in Inglewood also offer an incredible variety of local produce for creating the charcuterie board of your dreams – open til 7pm and 6:30pm respectively on Saturdays and all day Sunday.

Our top picnic spots? The Botanical Gardens, Bengalla Reserve or under the giant shady trees at boat ramp of the Macintyre River – all in Goondiwindi, or at the Yelarbon Recreation Grounds if you’re out east.

Indulge in yesteryear

Fancy yourself a bit of a history buff? You’ll love taking a step back in time at the Inglewood Heritage Centre and Australian Tobacco Museum. Open seven days a week with a digital self-check-in, you’ll explore historical Tobacco Farm exhibits, scale replicas, transport relics and more.

Other historical hot-spots open dawn ‘til dusk, 365 days a year include the Yelarbon Recreation Grounds Railway Museum; Yelarbon Memorial Hall, Dingo Fence and ANZAC tribute; the Old Bridge Precinct in Goondiwindi featuring the Tree of Knowledge and Levee Monument, and the Gunsynd Statue – our famous Goondiwindi Grey racehorse.
