10 School Holiday Activities in Goondiwindi Region (free printable!)
Published on 09 December 2025
Summer holidays are here and it’s time to get the kids out and exploring our beautiful Goondiwindi region. There is so much to see and plenty of places for the kids to explore, burn energy and make some memories for the Summer of 2026...
To help you out, we’ve created the Ultimate Scavenger Hunt for the kids to complete over the holidays which can also be used as a "Parent's Guide to Keeping Sane" over the holidays. You’re welcome!
And bonus, most of them are free.
Simply screenshot the Ultimate Scavenger Hunt at the end of this blog and find below our top 10 ideas on how to explore the region this Summer below.
1. FIND THE 5 HIDDEN CATS IN BOWEN LANE
Bowen Lane isn’t just great to admire the artwork from Lanescape, there are also 5 hidden cats for the kids to find! Set them with a challenge to find all 5 cats along the lane and then head to one of our many cafes for a well-deserved milkshake afterwards.
2. HOW MANY DIFFERENT CROPS CAN BE FOUND AT OUR VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE?
Head to the Goondiwindi Visitor Information Centre to discover our large display of all the crops grown in our region. Wheat, cotton, sorghum and barley are just some of the few! While you’re there, let the kids freely roam through our Visitor Information Centre to learn about our region, even pick up a map or two to use for craft later on! They can also access our library to stash up on their holiday reading lists, roam through the art gallery, or sit to enjoy a good puzzle or boardgame – all in air conditioning – perfect for those really stinking hot days!
3. FIND THE PELICAN (or even a fossil?!) ALONG THE RIVER WALK
An early morning walk, bike ride or scoot along the river walk is a great way to burn some summer holiday energy. Give the kids the challenge to find the Pelican to tick off the Scavenger Hunt. The riverwalk is a hum of activity in the summertime with fun gym activities along the way to keep the kids busy. If being a gym buff isn’t your preference, you can enjoy the many installations of murals and artworks scattered along the path or admire the bird life.
4. FIND THE SMILEY FACE AT NUNGWAI ARTWORKS
Head out to Angus Wilson’s Nungwai Sculpture as part of the Goondiwindi Region’s Art Trail and see if you can spot the larger-than-life smiley face that is hidden. While you’re there, check out all the other artworks by our local legend, Angus! *Please be mindful that the driveway is private property and not to be accessed by the public.
5. FIND THE BIG COD
Set the kids on a mission to find the Big Cod at a local park and rest stop – or better yet, grab some worms from the local servo and try to catch one instead! There are many local free reserves that are accessible along Kildonan Road (better known as the river road) that are the perfect spot for an afternoon of fishing.
6. HAVE A PHOTO WITH THE GUNSYND STATUE
Gunsynd brings the main character energy to Goondiwindi and what’s a scavenger hunt without a visit to the statue! If the kids are interested in the history of our beloved Goondiwindi Grey, there is a great display of memorabilia located at the front of the library for them to explore too.
Fancy a day-trip out of town? The rest of our tips require a little roadie, so pack the snacks and hit the road...
7. FIND THE YELARBON SILO ART MURAL
Head out on the Cunningham Highway (past the Nungwai Sculptures) for approximately 30 minutes and stop at the Yelarbon Silos for the ultimate art experience! The iconic artwork titled ‘When the Rain Comes” is visible as you drive into Yelarbon and there is a viewing area that explains the story of the artwork. This viewing area is also home to an Artefacts Museum, an old weighbridge and information about the Yelarbon town.
8. HAVE A RIDE IN THE COOLY COASTER AT COOLMUNDA OLIVES!
A little hidden gem of the region is the Cooly Coaster at Coolmunda Olives! A 10-seater electric buggy that you can hire to drive around the Olive Groves or enjoy a guided tour. Pack a picnic and create your own kind of fun with a unique way to spend a few hours teaching the kids all about how olives are grown and processed. Coolmunda Dam is just a skip and a hop from the olive grove and is the perfect spot for a quick swim, bird watching, water sports or fishing. If you want to make your daytrip turn into an overnight adventure, you can book a 2 bedroom cabin on the water via the Lake Coolmunda Caravan Park.
9. FIND SANTAS SLEIGH AT GREENUP MEETING PLACE
Fancy some Christmas spirit? Greenup Meeting Place has been transformed into a Christmas Wonderland with lights, reindeers and its very own sleigh. Pop out for a visit, grab a bite to eat at CC Café, a browse at the lovely gift shop and enjoy the Christmas cheer! There is plenty of space for the kids to run around and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. This is a great spot to visit at night with the lights too, but please be mindful of campers and locals.
10. VISIT THE TEXAS RABBIT WORKS
Open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday – the Texas Rabbit Works is a great place to visit and learn about the last rabbit processing works in Australia. It tells a fascinating story of the rabbit plague that once dominated the area and the rabbit industry that saved Texas from the grips of the Great Depression. This is a must do! Afterwards, grab a bite to eat at the infamous bright yellow Stockman Hotel on the main street and a spot of shopping in the local boutiques. Finish off your day in Texas with a quick swim at the Texas Free Camp on the Dumaresq River or let the kids run wild at the all-accessibility soft ground park. The scenic drive to Texas makes a day trip to this iconic town well worth it!
