Are you ready for a pawsome adventure in the Goondiwindi Region?

Travelling with your canine companion can be one of the most rewarding experiences for both you and your pooch. They travel light, won’t complain about your choice of music and never repeatedly ask ‘are we there yet?’

To make the most of your weekend away or country road trip, it’s best to consider some extra preparation to ensure both you and your dog have a safe and enjoyable time.

Read on for our tips for pet-friendly travel across the Goondiwindi Region.

Plan Ahead

As the saying goes, preparation prevents poor performance – and when your holiday packing includes two legs and tail, it pays to be organised.

Here are a few things to consider before heading off on your journey:

  • Pet-friendly accommodation: if you’re planning on staying in a motel or caravan park, it’s best to check ahead to see if your furry friend can be accommodated. Check out our accommodation listings here.
  • Microchip and ID tag: new places are new adventures ready to be explored! Don’t let your puppy catch you off guard with their own little adventure out and about. Make sure they have a collar ID tag with your correct contact information and it’s also a great idea to microchip your pet for added safety.
  • Vet visits: If you’re needing to visit the vet on your travels to the Goondiwindi Region, we have two in Goondiwindi – Border Veterinary Surgery and Goondiwindi & District Veterinary Services are happy to help.

Packing for your Pooch

You’re not the only one that needs a packing list. Be sure to consider the following when packing for your pooch:

  • Food and water: bring enough food for the trip, plus a little extra! If your dog is on a special diet, ensure you have enough supplies in case the local grocery store has limited options. Pick up one of those handy collapsable dog bowls too, for easy storage. For a treat, our local butchers have bones for good boys and girls on the road.
  • Leash and collar: Keeping your dog on a leash when out and about is essential, especially in a new environment.
  • Temperature: If you’re travelling in the winter months, be sure to consider a coat to keep your dog warm especially for when the temperature drops at night.
  • Waste bags: Be prepared for bathroom breaks along the way! The Goondiwindi region also has dog poo bag dispensers in Goondiwindi, Yelarbon, Inglewood & Texas. 'Stop & Scoop' locations can be found on the Council website.
  • Toys: Toys from home can make your puppy feel comfortable in new surroundings. Pack a few for entertainment in the car and when you’ve stopped for the night.

Hitting the Road with Rover

Make your road trip smooth sailing with these top tips:

  • Safety first: Be sure to have your canine companion secured in a crate, pet seatbelt or tied up in the back of a ute to prevent distractions while driving. Never leave your pet in a caravan whilst towing.
  • Frequent stops: Plan for regular breaks so your dog can stretch, relieve itself and burn off some energy, just like a toddler!
  • Never leave your dog in the car or caravan: Even on mild days, the temperature in a vehicle can rise quickly. Always ensure your dog is somewhere safe, cool and with water when you’re not in the car or caravan with them.

Destination Exploration

Once you’ve arrived at your destination, it’s time for you both to explore and have fun!

  • Research dog-friendly activities: Check our local tourism website here for parks, trails and other areas where dogs are allowed. There may even be an off-leash dog park in the area for your furry friend to let loose!
  • Dog friendly venues: Not keen on Fido having FOMO? Check our tourism website here to search for dog friendly venues in and around the region.
  • Respect the rules: Follow leash laws and any posted signs in the area. It’s always respectful to clean up after your dog as well - the Goondiwindi region has dog poo bag dispensers in Goondiwindi, Yelarbon, Inglewood & Texas. Locations can be found on the Council website here.
  • Share your experience: Use the hashtag #visitgoondiwindiregion on your social media posts to share your adventures with your furry friend.
