We love our art and we’re eager to share our Goondiwindi Region Art Trail - an ever-evolving celebration of sculptures, murals and street art – with you.

Stretching 160km across the region, you’ll need a day or two to take in all of the murals, sculptures, street art and installations, or if you only have limited time, stop off to view some highlights in this itinerary.

Start: Inglewood

Head to Inglewood to take a look at the mural on the side of the Old Commercial Hotel depicting tobacco crops and growers highlighting the importance of tobacco growing in our region during the 1950s and 1960s.

Nearby in Lions Park, you’ll find the Sundial sculpture and the ‘Macintyre Mural’ celebrating the development of the Macintyre Wind Farm Project, one of the largest onshore wind farms in the southern hemisphere.

Next stop: Texas

Drive 35 minutes south to the town of Texas on the banks of the Dumaresq River to visit the ‘Spirit of Texas’ sculpture, commissioned after the 2011 floods to symbolise the community’s resilience and overcoming of adversity. The rusted steel sculpture, representing a Phoenix, was influenced by the many water birds that appeared after the floods. At the same site, you’ll find a spot to sit amongst the garden and take in the recently completed mural, with 3D elements along the Texas Memorial Hall.

The Texas Art Gallery, in the Cultural Centre, hosts free curated exhibitions and nearby the Texas Cottage Industries store sells a range of locally made creations. Inside the Cultural Centre you’ll also find historical photographs of flooding that are worthy of a drop in.

Next, head to ‘Turning Things Around’, a large water tank mural commissioned by the Texas Arts Council to tell the story of the town and community.

Next up: Yelarbon

Travel further west to the small town of Yelarbon, home to one of the largest silo artworks in Australia. Set on the edge of the Spinifex Desert the mural, ‘When the Rain Comes’, painted across eight GrainCorp silos, celebrates the optimism of the local people, past and present. For the best view, park at the viewing area across the road.

Finish your trip: Goondiwindi

Driving into Goondiwindi along the Cunningham Highway, you can’t miss the ‘Nungwai’ super-sized collection of sculptures created by local artist and grazier, Angus Wilson, sitting prominently in one of his paddocks.

When you arrive in Goondiwindi follow the town’s Art Trail, starting at the Goondiwindi Civic Centre Art Space gallery, which hosts free curated exhibitions. From there, head out to Bowen Lane for a growing display of murals, sculptures and art installations created by artists, local school kids and the community, commissioned by local art group, Lanescape.

The Art Trail continues along the Macintyre River on the River Walk. Take a stroll from the Old Border Bridge marked by the ‘Celebration Mural’ painted by local indigenous artists, then head west and take in the artworks dotted along the riverbank.

End your Art Trail on the outskirts of town at the Goondiwindi Botanic Gardens where mature native trees, pond and wildlife form a backdrop for another of Angus Wilson’s sculptures ‘Botanicus Coranavus 20’ and artist Jonathan Crowther’s carved sandstone leaf sculpture, ‘Botanica’.
