10 Things to do in Goondiwindi
Published on 04 March 2026
Locals joke that “Gundy” is the centre of the universe with 5 major highways connecting our town to the rest of Australia and honestly, who are we to argue?
Situated on the Queensland-New South Wales border, we are the perfect place for you to stop for a few nights and enjoy some good old-fashioned country hospitality. Here are 10 Top Tips of what to do while you are here – from things for art lovers, fashionistas, foodies, history buffs and everyone in between.
1. Goondiwindi Cotton Tours
Our region has a rich and proud agriculture background, and the Goondiwindi Cotton Tour is the perfect insight into regional life. Climb aboard the Goondiwindi Cotton tour bus for a behind the scenes guided tour of the town and visit a working cotton farm where you’ll gain firsthand knowledge of cotton cultivation and harvesting processes. Discover the history of cotton production in Australia and the evolution from field to fabric with your lovely local tour guides Lois (pictured above!) & Mike. The tour also stops at the Gunsynd Statue for a photo opportunity and includes morning tea at the Customs House Museum. Tours run from March to November, and bookings are essential through the Goondiwindi Cotton website. Book Your Farm & Town Tour | Goondiwindi Cotton – Experience Our Heritage
2. Custom House Museum
Steeped in history and a local Goondiwindi landmark – the Customs House Museum takes a step back in time with history, photographs, displays and artefacts used by the early pioneers of Goondiwindi. Learn about the history and growth of the wool and agriculture industries across the region before exploring their newest addition of war memorabilia in its own standalone museum onsite (pictured above). Also a prominent feature are photographs of the floods of Goondiwindi and how the real MVP of our town is the levee, who has saved the town on numerous occasions.
3. Discover the Nungwai Artwork by Angus Wilson
A collection of iconic sculptures marks the entrance to Goondiwindi along the Cunningham Highway thanks to a local artist, Angus Wilson, who has a love of re-using old materials and breathing new life into them. Only a 5-minute drive from town, you (literally) can't miss this collection of artworks from a giant ‘Coat of Arms’ to towering sandstone sculptures and Angus’s latest artwork called ‘Smoko in the Meadow’, pictured above. You won’t be disappointed by this amazing display of artwork by a passionate Goondiwindi local and it’s a must-do in our region.
4. Wander the Goondiwindi ArtSpace
The Goondiwindi ArtSpace gallery is located within our local library and features new exhibitions every six weeks. These exhibitions range from local projects to collections from various artists – and is always worth a visit! If you’re a planner and would like to know what’s on – head to the What's On page of our tourism website for further details on current exhibitions listings.
5. Say G’Day to Gunsynd!
You know what they say – "Did you even visit Gundy without visiting Gunsynd?”. The iconic 'Goondiwindi Grey' Gunsynd is a local legend here in Goondiwindi and is celebrated with both a memorabilia museum and statue that tells the full story of this remarkable horse with a rich history.
The Gunsynd statue is situated in the Apex Park on the banks of the mighty McIntyre River with a backdrop of beautiful trees. The museum is housed in our local library with an extensive display of his many trophies, rugs and other memorabilia including videos and souvenirs.
If you’re a lover of all things horse racing, one of our region’s biggest events is the Goondiwindi Picnic Races! Plan your trip to include this great event, held in April each year.
6. Stroll down the lane to discover Lanescape Art Trail
Some very clever locals of Goondiwindi have been transforming our streetscape one lane and amenity structure at a time with inspiring works of public art. Each year the collection grows with new commissions and creations of public artworks throughout the town’s CBD. Along with major painted murals and sculptures, look out for some smaller artworks hidden throughout Bowen Lane and along the river path. This trail is perfect for families to see how many different artworks you can find and how many cats you can count! The creativity culminates every year during October for the ‘Lanescape Festival’ - a family friendly and fun filled evening that officially opens the new art for the year (pictured above). Celebrations include street performers, interactive art workshops, live music and plenty of food and drink stalls – so if you’re in town, don’t miss out!
7. Mecca of shopping on our main street
The beloved 'main street' as it's known to locals, is a mecca for shoppers with a huge range of shops featuring something for everyone. In these amazing stores, you will find local and international labels and wares with some stores stocking some of the most incredible fashion and homeware labels as well as locally made and owned treasures. Each store is a vibrant collection of fashion, homewares and gifts that are an experience within themselves - like Nutmeg Home shown above. Goondiwindi is widely known for incredible shopping, so don't hold back while on Marshall Street and bring a little country luxury home with you. Just remember that we like to make the most out of their weekends so stores close at 12noon on a Saturday and most stores reopen on Monday at 9am.
8. Endless places to enjoy a great meal!
Don’t be fooled by this ‘small country town’ because one of the best things about Goondiwindi is the food and coffee! You don't have to walk too far in Goondiwindi to find a great cup of coffee or city-rivalling meal any day of the week. The main street is dotted with cafes to help you curb your appetite ranging from vegan, gluten-free and even a dessert sweets bar! For the classic pub meal, all our local pubs hit the spot with the perfect country charm and a great steak. We are also now home to a brewery, Border Brewing (their pizza oven in action above), and Alfie's - a cute cafe meets cocktail bar with coast like vibes.
9. Soak up the Mighty Macintyre on our Riverwalk
If you are wanting to stretch your legs with the best view in Australia (our opinion), we have a wonderful 3-kilometre walkway that follows the majestic tree-lined Macintyre River. Not only can you enjoy the beautiful view and birdlife – the path is also dotted with many interactive activities including exercise stations, a series of interpretive signs about the history of the river and beautiful artwork and murals to admire along the way.
10. Illuminate the Flow – Art & Light Show on Water tanks
Be sure to take an evening stroll to enjoy ‘Illuminate the Flow’, an innovative nighttime video installation that projects artworks onto the McLean Street water towers. The project runs nightly from sunset, and features works from local artists which are continuously updated throughout the year. This is a beautiful view for both our locals and tourists to enjoy!
